Urban Nature Research Project

In recent years, urban planners and policy-makers have been noticing a positive correlation between nature in urban areas and quality of life. The presence of nature, especially in dense urban centers, has significant effects on a human being’s physical and mental health. Historically, man has lived in areas encompassed by nature and natural elements. Cities have existed for thousands of years in proximity to natural environments to which mankind had direct access. Over time, the human population began to increase exponentially, resulting in the creation of distinct places and spaces markedly different than those in the past. Man has now removed himself from nature, resulting in detrimental health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Living in cities and crowded living conditions is not, in itself, the cause of this epidemic. In reality, cities can encourage active lifestyles, but it is not until their designs implement different kinds of nature that they especially facilitate healthy living habits. It is this inclusion of nature in urban settings that has a positive effect on human beings’ physical, mental, and emotional health.
