Ellis Island Redevelopment and Rehabilitation Plan
Ellis Island, located in the Upper New York Bay acted as a gateway for over 12 million immigrants to come into the United States from 1892 until 1954. Our vision for Ellis Island is to create a new use for in it the 21st century where history meets the forever changing modern world. Our plan rehabilitates the pre-existing hospital wing structures and recreates places and spaces in which visitors will want to visit in order to learn, work, and take a day trip to. Our plan brings history to life with creative, interactive exhibits bringing back the stories of the immigrants who came through Ellis Island in a new and interesting way. We have also created a new park plan that uses the land as a flood control mechanism. By creating a rolling hill on the perimeter of the island while also implementing a new boardwalk design with a flood-glass wall to protect the island against rising sea levels and future issues, without taking away its beauty. Younger and older generations will be able to appreciate the outdoors, enjoy a leisure stroll around the boardwalk, and learn about the history of our nation, the immigration process, and what has made our country the diverse place that exists today.
